Camino Frances 10 May 2024 - El Acebo de San Miguel to Ponferrada

Celebrating an Anniversary on the Camino: A Day of Ups, Downs, and Tea Troubles

Today marks a special day—our anniversary! I tried calling Glenn to share the moment, but he must have been busy. Thankfully, he rang back later, though the connection was a bit patchy.

Our journey today took us to Ponferrada via Molinaseca, and while the walk was mostly downhill, it felt like Mother Nature had a mischievous sense of humor. Just when we thought we were done with climbing, another uphill stretch would appear, making the subsequent downhills feel even steeper. The path itself was a mix of slate, shale, and scattered boulders, making for slow and unsteady progress. It was a workout for muscles I didn’t even know I had! Alison, ever the optimist, kept reminding me to “breathe through my toes,” but between blowing my nose and coughing, I was just happy to be breathing at all.

By the time we stumbled into Molinaseca, we were exhausted but relieved. Lunch was a much-needed break, though it sparked yet another debate about how to make a proper cup of black tea with milk. For the third time in three days, we were served hot water with milk already added, and expected to somehow produce tea from it. We politely declined and explained (again) that we needed boiling water, a tea bag, and the milk on the side. The waitress insisted it was the same thing, but her boss eventually stepped in and brought us what we asked for. Victory at last!

Molinaseca

As we left Molinaseca, we spotted the taxi driver who had rescued us yesterday. I almost asked her for another lift—I probably should have! The road out of town seemed determined to test us, winding uphill, around corners, and then uphill again. I kept wondering, When will it end?

At one point, I found myself sitting on the side of the road, struggling to catch my breath—definitely not my finest moment. But we pushed through and finally made it to our destination. Alison, as always, was a star and found our hotel. After a refreshing shower and a short rest, we decided to explore the Knights Templar Castle. Sadly, I hit another wall halfway through, so we headed back to the hotel for dinner and an early night.

Today’s stats: 36,011 steps and 15.2 km of challenging terrain.

Accommodation:  Hotel Aroi Pierzo Plaza

It wasn’t easy, but it was another unforgettable day on the Camino. Here’s to anniversaries, perseverance, and the eternal quest for a decent cup of tea!

The Taj Mahal: A Dawn of Wonder and Reflection What can I possibly say about the Taj Mahal that hasn’t already been said? No words, no photographs, no stories can truly capture the essence of this architectural masterpiece. It’s one of those rare places that transcends description, leaving you in silent awe as you stand before its grandeur. Our day began in the predawn darkness, with a 5:45 AM departure from the hotel. By 5:55 AM, we were at the gates of the Taj Mahal, the air crisp and tinged with anticipation. A short 500-metre walk brought us to the entrance, where a queue had already formed. The gates open half an hour before sunrise, and thankfully, we didn’t have to wait long before we were ushered in, stepping into a world that felt almost surreal. Our guide, Alok—a man who seems to hold the entire history of India in his mind—gave us a brief but captivating history of the Taj Mahal. We learned about the love story behind its creation, the painstaking craftsmanship, and th...

A Whirlwind Day: From Delhi to Jaipur’s Jewels Traveling is an adventure, and sometimes that adventure comes with a few unexpected twists. Last night was one of those moments. Around midnight, Delhi belly decided to make an unwelcome appearance. Thankfully, I had some Lomotil on hand, which worked its magic and saved the night. But just as I was starting to feel better, another challenge arose. A group on our floor arrived around 12:30 AM, and from the sound of it, they were ready to party. The TV blared, voices echoed through the halls, and the festivities continued until about 3:30 AM. Exhausted and desperate for sleep, I later found out at breakfast that one of our tour group members had called reception just after 3:00 AM to complain. That’s when the noise finally stopped. Thank goodness for small mercies! The alarm buzzed at 5:15 AM, and it was time to drag myself out of bed for a quick shower and to pack up. Our bags needed to be outside our doors by...

A Day in Delhi: History, Spirituality, and a Lucky Break Our day began bright and early at 6:15 AM. After a quick shower and a hearty breakfast of Glenn’s favourite—bacon and eggs—we fuelled up for a full day of exploring Delhi. I grabbed some fresh cut fruit to snack on during the bus ride, knowing we’d need the energy for the packed itinerary ahead.   Our first stop was supposed to be the iconic Red Fort, but we were disappointed to find out it was closed for a month-long restoration. Instead, we settled for a drive-by glimpse of this magnificent structure. The Red Fort, built by the same Mughal emperor who commissioned the Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan, is steeped in history. After the death of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, Shah Jahan was so heartbroken that he left Agra, moved to Delhi, and built both the Red Fort and the Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India.   Speaking of the Jama Masjid, our next stop was this breathtaking mosque. Visiting required a bit of prepa...
