Camino Frances 11 May 2024 - Ponferrada to Cacabelos

A Scenic Stroll Through Spain’s Vineyard Country

Adapted from Alison's diary entry:

Our day began early with breakfast at 7:30 AM and bags packed by 8:00. By 9:00 AM, we were lacing up our walking shoes and setting off on today’s journey from Ponferrada to Cacabelos. This stretch of the Camino marked our entry into the lush vine region of Northern Spain, a landscape that felt like stepping into a postcard. Rolling hills stretched endlessly, dotted with a mix of ancient and newly planted vines. Some of the older vines were so thick and gnarled they resembled trees, standing proudly in untended fields. Meanwhile, the younger vines, protected by covers at their base, patiently waited for their time to bear fruit in the coming years. It was a beautiful reminder of the cycle of growth and harvest that defines this region.

The walk itself was a mix of asphalt and gravel roads, which, while scenic, were tough on the feet. Thankfully, the terrain was relatively flat with only a few small climbs, making it manageable despite the heat. Ah, the heat! We’d hoped to avoid it by traveling in May, but the sun had other plans. By mid-morning, we were grateful for a refreshing break in Fuentes Nuevas, where we cooled down with cold drinks and indulged in Magnum ice creams—a perfect pick-me-up.

Kim, ever the nature enthusiast, had us pause to admire the roses along the way, their fragrance filling the air. Lunch was a simple affair in Camponaraya, where we nibbled on cake from the breakfast bar and shared a mandarin. The search for shade became a recurring theme, and I found myself scanning the road ahead for any hint of relief from the sun. Eventually, we stumbled upon a perfect spot where Alison and Kim had already settled. To our delight, a local vendor had set up a stall selling handmade jewelery and crafts, adding a touch of charm to our break.

The rest of the walk was a rhythm of short stops—catching our breath, sipping water, and giving our feet a much-needed rest. As always, Kim and Alison were ahead, patiently waiting for me to catch up.

By the time we reached Cacabelos, we were ready to unwind. After checking into our accommodation, a hot bath and a good rest were all we had energy for. No sightseeing today—just relaxation. Dinner at the hotel was a quiet affair, followed by an early night to recharge for the next leg of our journey.

Today’s stats: 28,040 steps and 15.7 km

Accommodation:  La Moncioa de San Lazaro

Stunning vineyard views, fragrant roses, and the warmth of the Spanish sun. Until tomorrow, Buen Camino!

Kim, Louise & Alison

The Taj Mahal: A Dawn of Wonder and Reflection What can I possibly say about the Taj Mahal that hasn’t already been said? No words, no photographs, no stories can truly capture the essence of this architectural masterpiece. It’s one of those rare places that transcends description, leaving you in silent awe as you stand before its grandeur. Our day began in the predawn darkness, with a 5:45 AM departure from the hotel. By 5:55 AM, we were at the gates of the Taj Mahal, the air crisp and tinged with anticipation. A short 500-metre walk brought us to the entrance, where a queue had already formed. The gates open half an hour before sunrise, and thankfully, we didn’t have to wait long before we were ushered in, stepping into a world that felt almost surreal. Our guide, Alok—a man who seems to hold the entire history of India in his mind—gave us a brief but captivating history of the Taj Mahal. We learned about the love story behind its creation, the painstaking craftsmanship, and th...

A Whirlwind Day: From Delhi to Jaipur’s Jewels Traveling is an adventure, and sometimes that adventure comes with a few unexpected twists. Last night was one of those moments. Around midnight, Delhi belly decided to make an unwelcome appearance. Thankfully, I had some Lomotil on hand, which worked its magic and saved the night. But just as I was starting to feel better, another challenge arose. A group on our floor arrived around 12:30 AM, and from the sound of it, they were ready to party. The TV blared, voices echoed through the halls, and the festivities continued until about 3:30 AM. Exhausted and desperate for sleep, I later found out at breakfast that one of our tour group members had called reception just after 3:00 AM to complain. That’s when the noise finally stopped. Thank goodness for small mercies! The alarm buzzed at 5:15 AM, and it was time to drag myself out of bed for a quick shower and to pack up. Our bags needed to be outside our doors by...

A Day in Delhi: History, Spirituality, and a Lucky Break Our day began bright and early at 6:15 AM. After a quick shower and a hearty breakfast of Glenn’s favourite—bacon and eggs—we fuelled up for a full day of exploring Delhi. I grabbed some fresh cut fruit to snack on during the bus ride, knowing we’d need the energy for the packed itinerary ahead.   Our first stop was supposed to be the iconic Red Fort, but we were disappointed to find out it was closed for a month-long restoration. Instead, we settled for a drive-by glimpse of this magnificent structure. The Red Fort, built by the same Mughal emperor who commissioned the Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan, is steeped in history. After the death of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, Shah Jahan was so heartbroken that he left Agra, moved to Delhi, and built both the Red Fort and the Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India.   Speaking of the Jama Masjid, our next stop was this breathtaking mosque. Visiting required a bit of prepa...
