Camino Frances 4 May 2024 - Madrid to Leon

From Madrid to León: The Journey Begins

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and thankfully, all the hotels we’ve stayed at so far have served up a delicious spread to fuel our adventures. Today marked the start of our Camino journey, and we were ready to hit the road—or rather, the rails.

Our Renfe Fast Train

A Smooth (Mostly) Train Ride to León

I’d booked us on the fast train with Renfe, Spain’s national railway service, to take us from Madrid to León. We grabbed a taxi to Madrid-Chamartín-Clara Campoamor Station, where we boarded the train scheduled to depart at 10:24 AM. Well, scheduled is the key word here. The train ended up leaving about 40 minutes late, and we faced another 20-minute delay along the way. But hey, travel is all about rolling with the punches, right?

We’d splurged on first-class tickets, which meant we had assigned seats and a bit more legroom—perfect for relaxing and enjoying the scenic views as we sped toward León.

Settling into León

Once we arrived, we got our bearings (hooray—my phone was finally unlocked, and the eSIM was installed!), and walked to our hotel. After checking in and settling into our room, we headed out to explore the city.

By around 3:30 PM, we were ready for lunch and opted for pizza—because sometimes you just need a slice of comfort food. Post-lunch, we visited the Basilica de San Isidoro, a stunning Romanesque church with a rich history. The architecture and atmosphere were breathtaking, and it felt like the perfect way to ease into the Camino spirit.

The Eternal Quest for a Proper Cup of Tea

Now, let’s talk about tea. As self-proclaimed tea enthusiasts, we’ve discovered that Spain is very much a coffee-drinking country. Ordering a simple cup of black tea with milk on the side (so the tea has time to steep properly) has become a comical challenge. Despite our best efforts—¿Puedo tomar una taza de té negro con leche aparte?—it seems to be a concept lost in translation. This quest for the perfect cup of tea might just haunt us for the rest of our travels.

A Light Evening

After our tea adventure (or misadventure), we decided to skip dinner. Between the late lunch and the excitement of the day, we were ready to rest up for the adventures ahead.

Ready for the Camino

From here on out, our accommodation and luggage transfers are being expertly arranged by RAW Travel, so we can focus on the journey itself. The Camino Frances awaits, and we’re ready to take it one step at a time.

León has already charmed us with its history and beauty, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the Camino has in store. Stay tuned for more updates from the trail!

Pro Tip for Fellow Travelers: If you’re a tea lover visiting Spain, maybe pack your own tea bags—just in case. 😉

The Taj Mahal: A Dawn of Wonder and Reflection What can I possibly say about the Taj Mahal that hasn’t already been said? No words, no photographs, no stories can truly capture the essence of this architectural masterpiece. It’s one of those rare places that transcends description, leaving you in silent awe as you stand before its grandeur. Our day began in the predawn darkness, with a 5:45 AM departure from the hotel. By 5:55 AM, we were at the gates of the Taj Mahal, the air crisp and tinged with anticipation. A short 500-metre walk brought us to the entrance, where a queue had already formed. The gates open half an hour before sunrise, and thankfully, we didn’t have to wait long before we were ushered in, stepping into a world that felt almost surreal. Our guide, Alok—a man who seems to hold the entire history of India in his mind—gave us a brief but captivating history of the Taj Mahal. We learned about the love story behind its creation, the painstaking craftsmanship, and th...

A Whirlwind Day: From Delhi to Jaipur’s Jewels Traveling is an adventure, and sometimes that adventure comes with a few unexpected twists. Last night was one of those moments. Around midnight, Delhi belly decided to make an unwelcome appearance. Thankfully, I had some Lomotil on hand, which worked its magic and saved the night. But just as I was starting to feel better, another challenge arose. A group on our floor arrived around 12:30 AM, and from the sound of it, they were ready to party. The TV blared, voices echoed through the halls, and the festivities continued until about 3:30 AM. Exhausted and desperate for sleep, I later found out at breakfast that one of our tour group members had called reception just after 3:00 AM to complain. That’s when the noise finally stopped. Thank goodness for small mercies! The alarm buzzed at 5:15 AM, and it was time to drag myself out of bed for a quick shower and to pack up. Our bags needed to be outside our doors by...

A Day in Delhi: History, Spirituality, and a Lucky Break Our day began bright and early at 6:15 AM. After a quick shower and a hearty breakfast of Glenn’s favourite—bacon and eggs—we fuelled up for a full day of exploring Delhi. I grabbed some fresh cut fruit to snack on during the bus ride, knowing we’d need the energy for the packed itinerary ahead.   Our first stop was supposed to be the iconic Red Fort, but we were disappointed to find out it was closed for a month-long restoration. Instead, we settled for a drive-by glimpse of this magnificent structure. The Red Fort, built by the same Mughal emperor who commissioned the Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan, is steeped in history. After the death of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, Shah Jahan was so heartbroken that he left Agra, moved to Delhi, and built both the Red Fort and the Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India.   Speaking of the Jama Masjid, our next stop was this breathtaking mosque. Visiting required a bit of prepa...
