A Day of Serenity, Shopping, and Sunset Feasts on the Indian Ocean Coast

Today was all about sleep, shopping, and soaking in the relaxed vibes of our stunning location. We’re staying at the Marriott on the Indian Ocean Coast, and honestly, with the beach right at our doorstep, we could easily spend a week here. But alas, we only have two nights, so we’re making the most of every moment.
Most of us slept in and enjoyed a leisurely late breakfast. Glenn and I decided it was time to tackle the gift shopping we’d been putting off—procrastination at its finest, considering we only have one day left!

Joy and Ally joined us, but not before making a quick detour to the pharmacy for Deb, who’s been under the weather for the past 36 hours. Unfortunately, the pharmacy didn’t have what she needed and suggested she see a doctor. Their tuk-tuk driver offered to take them to a voodoo doctor instead—definitely not your average travel story! They returned with a mysterious potion for Deb and met us at the hotel reception, ready to shop.
We downloaded the Pick Me app and ordered a car to take us to Ambalangoda, a town known for its mask-making and souvenirs. The car arrived, and the four of us squeezed into the compact four-seater. Joy gave the driver the name of a different town that reception had given her, Aluthgama, which was in the opposite direction. But as luck would have it, Aluthgama turned out to be a great spot for gift shopping too. The driver patiently waited for an hour,  even though we said we would just book another car for the return trip.

We scoured the shops, picking up gifts for family (fingers crossed we didn’t forget anyone!). Afterward, he drove us back to the hotel, where we enjoyed a light lunch of the welcome fruit left in our room.

The afternoon was spent in the downstairs bar with Stephen, Kylie, and Ally, watching rugby league. Ally declared it wasn’t “real football”—a clear giveaway of her Victorian roots.
Later, we strolled down to the spot where they’d released turtle hatchlings the previous evening, hoping to catch the spectacle again. Unfortunately, it wasn’t happening tonight. Instead, Glenn decided to lend a hand to the local fishermen pulling in their nets. Stephen joined in, and both quickly discovered just how grueling the work can be—definitely not as easy as it looks!
As the day wound down, Wei and Harry arranged dinner at a beachside bar next door. It was the perfect way to spend our last night here. With the sun setting over the ocean, casting golden hues across the water, we feasted on fresh seafood and raised our glasses to an unforgettable trip. Who could ask for more?
This place has been a dream, and while we’re sad to leave, we’re taking home memories (and souvenirs!) that will last a lifetime. Until next time, Sri Lanka! 🌴🌅

A Journey Through Sri Lanka: From Ancient Temples to Baby Elephants and Monsoon Showers The day began with a quintessentially English breakfast—no buffet in sight—fueling us for the long journey ahead. Our coach awaited, ready to whisk us away on a six-hour drive to Galle, a coastal gem in southern Sri Lanka. But before we reached our destination, the day promised a tapestry of cultural, historical, and natural wonders. A Glimpse of Myth and Legend As we rolled through the lush landscapes of central Sri Lanka, we caught a fleeting glimpse of the Seetha Amman Temple, a site steeped in myth and devotion. Known also as Ashok Vatika Sita Temple, this ancient Vaishnavite shrine is said to be the very spot where Sita, the heroine of the Hindu epic Ramayana, was held captive by the demon king Ravana. The temple’s serene setting amidst the misty hills of Nuwara Eliya feels almost otherworldly, as if the whispers of Rama’s quest to rescue Sita still linger in...

The Taj Mahal: A Dawn of Wonder and Reflection What can I possibly say about the Taj Mahal that hasn’t already been said? No words, no photographs, no stories can truly capture the essence of this architectural masterpiece. It’s one of those rare places that transcends description, leaving you in silent awe as you stand before its grandeur. Our day began in the predawn darkness, with a 5:45 AM departure from the hotel. By 5:55 AM, we were at the gates of the Taj Mahal, the air crisp and tinged with anticipation. A short 500-metre walk brought us to the entrance, where a queue had already formed. The gates open half an hour before sunrise, and thankfully, we didn’t have to wait long before we were ushered in, stepping into a world that felt almost surreal. Our guide, Alok—a man who seems to hold the entire history of India in his mind—gave us a brief but captivating history of the Taj Mahal. We learned about the love story behind its creation, the painstaking craftsmanship, and th...

A Leisurely Farewell: Winding Down and Wrapping Up Our Adventure After two weeks of early mornings and non-stop exploration, today was all about slowing down and savoring our final moments. Thanks to a late checkout, we got to enjoy another blissful sleep-in and a leisurely breakfast—a rare treat after so many days on the go.   With no major plans for the day, we took the opportunity to relax, read, and make sure our bags were packed and ready to go. Of course, we also attempted the impossible: trying to squeeze the heavenly Sheridan bed and pillows into our luggage. Spoiler alert—it didn’t quite work out, but a girl can dream, right?   We checked out at noon, and our bus arrived just before 1:00 pm to whisk us away. About half an hour into the journey, we made a quick pit stop at a service center before continuing on to Earls Regent hotel in Negombo. There, we spent a few hours unwinding by the pool, sipping on refresh...
